What moved the TGA today?
The Daily Treasury Statement reports the day's deposits and withdrawals separately from its closing balance. The largest categories below come from Table II for Oct 20, 2026. They are ranked by reported dollars, with the three largest on each side shown. These are components of gross cash flows, so adding only these six entries will not reproduce the day's net change.
deposits
- Public Debt Cash Issues (Table IIIB)$312.8B
- Taxes - Withheld Individual/FICA$3.1B
- DHS - Customs Duties, Taxes, and Fees$1.0B
withdrawals
- Public Debt Cash Redemp. (Table IIIB)$282.5B
- HHS - Marketplace Payments$14.2B
- Dept of Defense (DoD) - misc$3.0B
The full statement includes the smaller categories. Public debt cash issues and redemptions are financing flows and can be large even when ordinary tax receipts and program payments are modest. Figures are rounded to millions by Treasury. Read the categories alongside the total deposits and withdrawals above, rather than interpreting one large receipt as the explanation for the entire closing balance. The source is Treasury's DTS Table II on Fiscal Data.
How does the TGA affect bank reserves?
The TGA and reserve balances are both liabilities of the Federal Reserve. A payment into Treasury's account can move funds out of a bank's reserve account and into the TGA. Government spending can move them back. That accounting connection explains why a Treasury cash rebuild can coincide with falling reserves even when the Fed's total assets change little.
The size of the reserve change depends on the other entries on the Fed's balance sheet. Changes in reverse repo obligations, securities holdings or lending can offset part of a TGA move. A dollar added to the TGA therefore does not guarantee a dollar decline in the reserve series across an entire week. The Fed's August 6, 2025 FEDS Note explains these balance-sheet adjustments. Compare the dated components before assigning a weekly reserve change to Treasury cash management.
Why is the FRED TGA number different?
This page leads with a business day's closing TGA balance from the Daily Treasury Statement. FRED also distributes weekly Treasury balances from H.4.1. WDTGAL is the Wednesday level; WTREGEN is the week average. A daily close, a Wednesday observation and an average can all be correct while showing different amounts.
Check both the date and the measurement window before comparing figures. A tax payment or a debt settlement late in the week can move a daily close substantially away from that week's average. Our net calculation uses Wednesday assets and the Wednesday TGA close, with a disclosed carry for a holiday. It never substitutes the week average into that formula. The H.4.1 release publishes the weekly measures side by side. The chart and history below preserve daily closes rather than smoothing them into an average.
