Galaxy Digital, the Nasdaq-listed digital assets firm (GLXY), launched the Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative on Tuesday, committing up to $5 million toward developer grants, a research publishing arm, and a new Quantum Advisory Council aimed at hardening Bitcoin against the arrival of cryptographically relevant quantum computers. Why the 1.7 Million BTC Number Matters

Bitcoin's security rests on elliptic curve cryptography. A machine running Shor's algorithm could derive a private key from an exposed public key, forge a signature, and drain a wallet with nothing on-chain to flag the theft. No such machine exists today. But the window is narrowing.

An estimated 1.7 million BTC sit in legacy pay-to-public-key (P2PK) addresses with public keys permanently on-chain. Those coins are the most exposed. A Bitcoiner holding in a modern SegWit or Taproot wallet faces a materially different risk profile than one sitting on a legacy address, and the practical action items are already available: avoid address reuse, don't hold in P2PK outputs. Here is the honest framing on the thesis: Galaxy's up to $5 million buys developer time and review capacity. It does not buy a consensus mechanism or a faster soft fork activation. Bitcoin's decentralized governance has no corporate sponsor that can force a timeline. The actual bottleneck, node operator and miner signaling for any BIP-360-class upgrade, is untouched by this grant program. If the grants produce funded developers shipping reviewed code and working wallet migration tooling within 18 months, the initiative justifies itself. If the $5 million concentrates in advisory council stipends and research PDFs with no shipped implementations and no soft fork activation progress, it doesn't.
