Govt accounts = interest paid to federal trust funds on the Government Account Series they hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much interest does the US pay by type of security?
In fiscal year 2026 gross interest on the public debt was $1.36 trillion, up 11.5% from fiscal year 2025: $1.07 trillion on securities held by the public and $292 billion on Government Account Series held by the government's own trust funds. By security, Treasury notes $508B, bills $254B, bonds $180B and TIPS $92.3B. Data through September 2026.
What is Government Account Series interest?
Interest paid to the government's own trust funds and accounts, such as Social Security and Medicare, on the securities they hold. This is the intragovernmental interest that net interest leaves out. In fiscal year 2026 it was $292 billion, 21.5% of gross interest expense.
Why is gross interest expense higher than net interest?
Net budget interest excludes interest credited to federal trust funds and other government accounts and nets other budget interest receipts. Gross interest expense measures accrual-basis interest across Treasury security types, including interest credited to those accounts. Differences in accounting and other interest receipts mean the gap is more than trust-fund interest. The comparisons with defense and receipts use budget net interest.
How much interest did Treasury bills cost in September 2026?
$22.3 billion in September 2026, and $254 billion fiscal year to date. Bills pay no coupon; their interest is the discount at which they sold, amortized over their life, so the bill line tracks short-term rates and the size of the bill stack closely.
